the year in books: january

I have always loved to read. Ever since I was little. Any reading material would do. When I ran out of books, my granny's People's Friend and Ireland's Owns provided me with words to fuel my desire to read.

My mum who isn't an avid reader, could never understand my love for the written word.  I think it infuriated her that I constantly had my head in a book.  But reading transported me to new and exciting places. Reading provided me with a great escape.

As life took over and time constraints infringed, I have not made time to read my beloved books.  I still read lots of magazines, blogs, craft and cookery books, short bursts to satisfy my love of words.   But not nearly enough books.

I love the experience of reading.  The smell when you first open a new book. Turning the pages as you become engrossed in the story.  Marking your place with a bookmark until the next opportunity to cosy up and enjoy another few chapters.

I have been perusing the lovely Persephone Catalogue over the weekend, deliberating over which book to choose.  I will make my decision tonight and place an order.  A little gift for me.

I have already started to read This Perfect World, a novel unread on my bookshelf.  Number one of many more books, I hope.

Linking up with the lovely Laura for #theyearinbooks.  If you love to read you too should visit Laura at the circle of pine trees.  Her blog is beautiful.

I have also opened an account at Goodreads.  You can find me here.

  11. I've just joined the read-a-long, nothing will inspire us to devote more time to reading than a circle of friends with good recommendations! Chrissie x ps On those months when life gets in the way and I can't finish a novel, I will indeed do a cookery book review! ;-)

  12. I used to love reading but like you, time has conspired to rob me of the habit. By the time I go to bed I'm often too tired to read and have taken to looking at Instagram pictures and listening to the radio instead! As I'm out of the habit I have somewhat lost my way about what to read these days... so I'll be checking out the blog you recommend, and taking a look at what Persephone has to offer! Thanks Bee!

  13. I also love to read... especially in bed.
Sometimes when I have a really good book I go to bed earlier than usual! My husband also loves to read, so that's ok ;-). At the moment I'm reading about a 100 year old man who climbed out of the window on his birthday; it's fabulous hilarious!
    Love from Mirjam.

  14. I'm just like you - I love reading and find it's the perfect thing to do when you need to escape into another world for a little while.
And I also dip in and out of things at the moment. Probably something to do with being a mum to a toddler, but I've recently managed a novel or two (hooray!).
Looking forward to joining in with Laura's series. I hope you find plenty of opportunities for a good read x

  15. I used to be such a bookworm right up to my early 20s but of late I haven't read much… I just don't make the time I suppose! I will try harder though, as I miss it x

  19. I'm exactly the same. I see myself as a book worm but a relapsed one. In fact, I binge read. I go months and months without turning a page and then I start a book and I'm hooked and up till the early hours because I just can't stop. I'm wondering if the answer for me is to schedule everything into my diary so I have at least a fighting chance of doing it sometimes. Is that a bit nuts? I'm going to try it anyway. X

  20. Happy reading Bee, yes reading is such a lovely way to while away an hour(or so!) Like others I'm often so ready for sleep when I go to bed I manage only a page before my eyes are closing. Maybe Anna, scheduling is the right way to go!!
