the enormous beetroot

The sun came out to play today.  After hanging the washing on the line, I wandered around the garden.  It felt really lovely, if a little alien to feel the warmth of the sun on my skin.

The sunlight, bright and stark illuminated the garden.  Spring is definitely in the air and signs of new growth are appearing all around.  The ivy weaving its way up the ash tree has sprouted delicate new leaves, small but perfectly formed.  The viburnum continues to bud and flower and the thyme has beautiful coloured new growth, like tiny red flowers.

The last picture is of an enormous beetroot.  It reminded me of the story of The Enormous Turnip.  I hope this beetroot doesn't need to be pulled and pulled and pulled like the enormous turnip.

So are you enjoying the new season and the welcome sunshine?

  1. Hi Bee! Beautiful garden shots, it makes me think of the garden i used to have in London when I lived there...it's lovely when spring is starting. That beetroot is really like the one in the fairytale :)

  2. It reminded me of the Enormous Turnip as well, as soon as I saw it. I had a huge yellow one last year that I kept over winter to try and save some seed, but it fell victim to pests and small boys.

  3. I hope you have pulled your beetroot - the enormous turnip was a favourite bedtime story and we always had to do lots of actions. Hope the sun continues to shine x

  5. Lovely pictures Bee, Bloke threatened to give up the allotment but I am sure he knew it would spur me on to start on it. Last Monday I planted onions, this Monday I planted parsnips, by Easter I reckon I will have done it row by row - steady Eddy style. Jo x

  7. Wow that is a big beetroot! The sun is glorious, isn't it? Even though the air is still cold it's wonderful to feel a little warmth and that delicious spring smell in the air. Your photos are lovely, by the way, full of life. x

  8. Although we have the sunshine, there isn't any warmth yet (-20C today). Your fresh little plants do warm my heart though, and I'm looking forward to spring. I don't know of this story of the turnip, but it looks like you might have to put your back into getting the beet out of that soil!! Good luck ;) Wendy x

  9. Oh, I do love beetroot! I hope you've got plans for how you'll be eating it :)
Those little leaves on the thyme are sweet too, such pretty colours. We had fog here this morning but even that was nice - lots of spider's webs covered in dew. And the sun's back out now.
I'm glad you're savouring the arrival of spring.

  13. It's lovely to discover things around the garden once more and not lose shoes or boots in the mud while doing it! That beetroot will certainly need some muscle behind it to uproot! Enjoy xx

  14. It felt like spring for a few days there didn't it. But it's really chilly again here now, in fact the sweet pea teepees in pots that we'd dared to put out are having to be put in the hall every night to protect them from frost. I hope you're faring better ... it would be a pity if a hard frost damaged all this new growth.

  15. Just the lovliest photos here, they brought a big grin to my face! Such a hot weekend here, I've been out cutting the grass and doing outdoorsy jobs - agree the sun does feel rather alien, unless I'm turning into a vampire. Anything's possible...

Thanks for joining in and sharing the prettiness x
