precious things #5

My wedding dress. A precious thing full of memories, woven through every stitch and tiny detail. A reminder of so much happiness from our wedding day. The bodice laced by my bridesmaids as I nervously waited for it all to begin. Just a glimpse of the dress reminds me of the excitement and anticipation I felt on our special day.

Now it hangs inside its cover, unzipped occasionally. A pretty dress to be admired. But I have a quandary. It has been over ten years since our wedding and whilst I love my dress, I have wondered what to do with it.

For any of you who have a wedding dress or a special item of clothing, I'd love to know what you've chosen to do with yours.

  1. Hey Bee,
My wedding dress is packed away in the huge box that it came in. I tried it on a couple of years ago and couldn't zip it up all the way :(((( I wouldn't know what to do with it. If I had girls I'd perhaps offer it to them when they got married. Although I wouldn't let them do what that horribly spoilt younger sister did in the film 27 Dresses. I have an urge to try it on again.
    Lovely post.

  2. Beautiful details...
I still love my wedding dress, and if I had to choose again it would still be the same one !
    Only a bigger size, hahaha!
I don't know what to do with it actually, it's been in a box for 14 years now...
    Love from Mirjam xx

  3. What a lovely precious thing to pick! I really should root out my old wedding dress, I'm pretty sure I would pick the same dress again. Apart from keeping it covered and the occasional viewing I'm really not sure what you could do with such a precious item of clothing.

  4. What a lovely choice, but, of course what I want to see now is a photo of you wearing it on your wedding day! I can no longer fit into my wedding dress because the sleeves are too narrow. It's vacuum packed and stored under a bed.I can't part with it, although the wedding will have been forty-eight years ago come July!

  5. It's gorgeous. I think you should just keep it and see if one day anyone else needs it. CJ xx

  7. OOh let me share. I had a wedding dress from 1996 from a man I shouldn't have married in the first place, get my drift. My mum and dad moved house and brought it round when they moved to my new home with my Bloke. Jeez what do you do with it then? I gave it to our am dramatics group and Cinderella/sleeping beauty/princess etc. always wears it in the fairytale wedding scene at the end. That makes me laugh but they were really grateful for it. Yours looks far too lovely to do that with but I thought it would make you giggle. Jo x

  9. Oh, what a lovely Precious Thing to have! I'm so pleased you shared it with us - this is the sort of thing that encapsulates the idea behind this collaboration.
As for what to do with it - I have no idea! I'd be scared to do anything drastic to anything so special!
Thanks for joining in again, Bee. I'm still thinking up ideas for a new collaboration...

  10. A wonderful precious thing indeed. I have my dress - well, top and bottom actually - but have no idea what to do with it. It is precious though, so I will keep it because my Mum made it. So glad that you have yours! xx

  11. Didn't it used to be tradition to make your babies christening robes from your wedding dress? I think you are entitled to just 'have it' though, to take out and look at occasionally to remind you of what is hopefully one of the best days of your life...

  12. Oh Bee, what beautiful detailing. I gave my wedding dress to the charity shop a few months ago, when we had the huge pre-moving clear out of the loft. I thought I'd feel really sad to get rid of it, but it was relief as it was just sitting up there gathering dust. I don't feel remotely sentimental about it (it's not like I'm ever going to wear it again) and I like to think someone is getting some use from it now. (John said probably a cross dressing male - we had a good giggle about that...) xx

  13. Bee, your dress is so beautiful. My wedding dress is in its zippered bag, hanging on my closet. I never had it cleaned after our wedding though I should have done so because I dropped a bruschetta toast down the front of the bodice during the cocktail hour (the only appetizer I had time to eat with all the guest-greeting and it went all over my dress!). It's almost thirteen years and now the stain will probably never come out, but it is a reminder of the day. :)

  14. It's a lovely wedding dress, a very precious thing indeed.. My wedding dress is kept in a box. I had it made for me in the Philippines and it was sent over here when it was ready. I was worried that there'll be adjustments to make but luckily it fitted perfectly and it's just what I wanted. It's got some stains from some rose petals I stepped on during the party but five years on it's still waiting to be cleaned. Maybe I'll just leave it as it is; like Jennifer's, it's a reminder of the day. I have two daughters so I'm keeping my dress in case one of them would like to have it some day. x

  15. What a beautiful dress. I dyed mine bright pink and used it until it wore out but that was 32 years ago when long dresses were fashionable to wear and it was a very simple ensemble. A friend wore her grandmother's wedding dress - that her mother and cousin were also married in. Keep yours and share it out!

  16. What a beautiful post! I would love to see the rest of the dress sometime... Mine is also zipped up and hanging, ignored, in the cupboard. I always thought if I had a daughter perhaps she would want to wear it on her wedding day but as I've got the two boys (with no plans for more), I have no idea what to do with it... x
