one day in may

This Bank Holiday Monday dawned dry and bright. A lovely day to visit the woods in search of bluebells. We packed a picnic lunch, met up with friends and set off to explore.

The woodland was beautiful. Just beginning to come into leaf as the new growth appears slowly but surely. The beech leaves were especially pretty, all soft and translucent and a perfect shade of green. The woods were full of spring sounds; birdsong, babbling streams and rustling leaves. A soundtrack to total relaxation.

The little ones explored abandoned dens and built forts with fallen branches. We found a carpet of bluebells. Though not completely in bloom, they were very close. Oh well, I suppose that means we must return again another day.

Wildflowers bloomed along the path. Wood anemones, sweet violets and lesser celandine were among them. Sheep and baby lambs in the fields bordering the woodland enjoyed the sunshine, basking in the warmth. They were wise to enjoy it. It has been so cold here these past few days. Torrential rain and freezing winds do not feature in my expectations of May.

One of my best friends is getting married on Friday. I have everything crossed for pleasant weather. Even just a little sunshine. Come on May, you can be so gorgeous.

How about you? Have you been searching for bluebells?

  2. What a wonderful spot, rope swings are the best. I've seen a few odd bluebells here and there, but nothing like that, it's gorgeous. CJ xx

  3. What a lovely way to spend a day! The woods near our home is teeming with budding bluebells too - don't you just love how pretty nature is at this time of the year. Holding thumbs and crossing fingers for good wedding weather too,

  4. That sounds like a lovely day out. It's been so cold, wet and windy here too, such a shock to the system after our warm, dry April. I think the bluebells are a few weeks ahead down here, they are nearly on their way out. I would love to try to go on woodland bluebell walk soon. I do hope your friend has good weather. xx

  5. Fingers crossed for good wedding weather! Glad you're joining in with the prompts, and your walk sounds lovely. It's very similar here: Cold, wet and blustery but when the sun comes out it's beautiful. No better place to be than the woods in May!

  11. I love visiting woodland at this time of year. When I was a little girl there was a wood at the bottom of my Nanny's garden that we called the Bluebell wood. We used to pick them and have vases of them all along her windowsills. I still love them now but I prefer to leave them where they grow!

I hope you had a lovely day for the wedding. xx

It is wonderful to see the English woodland looking so pretty! There was always a bluebell wood in my childhood in Somerset ....great memories! I hope it is still there :-)

  13. Such beautiful images and I really hope it gets warmer for you soon! I have very fond memories of visiting bluebell forests, under the canopy of silver birch trees, as a child growing up in Hampshire, England. Beautiful :)

  17. Looks like a wonderful day out. We've not make it to the woods this year to see the bluebells. I completely intended to go but have probably left it a bit late now, they're pretty much over in the garden. Maybe we'll go and the weekend and see if there's still some to be found. xx
