the year in books: april

My book choice for April is a lovely hardback I bought a while back called The Land of Decoration. I love the illustration on the cover and the end papers. Not the most sensible reason for adding a title to my reading list but an irresistible one all the same.  I am a complete sucker for a pretty book.

I am looking forward to seeing if the story will equal its prettiness.

For #theyearinbooks March read, I chose The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  I really enjoyed it.  It was utterly absorbing from the start.

The Book Thief is the story of a little girl living in Germany during WW2. The story is told from the perspective of working class Germans during wartime.  Not a usual perspective, but very interesting.  Death narrates the novel, guiding the reader through the story, providing insights into the characters and future happenings. The writing style is unique and really adds to the experience.

I particularly loved Liesel, the little girl, her desire to read and her unquenchable love of words.  Qualities at the heart of every bibliophile.

I also finished The Night Rainbow which I started as a second read in February. It was fairly enjoyable. Definitely not a page turner.  Although short it took me a while to finish.  A 'slow burn', I would say.

  1. Ooh a book I've neither heard of or read - will look into it! I read The Book Thief when it came out, which I enjoyed. I'm reading Burial Rites now, so far so good! X

  3. This is a book that caught my eye as well, so I will be interested to hear what you think of it. Like you, the cover of a book often draws me in first. Trouble is, unless you have a huge house you have to stack them on shelves end on so you miss the prettiness of the cover.

  4. Hi Bee! I spotted this one too, at the local library. The paperback cover is different to your copy, but they had lots of them on the 'Book of the Week' shelf so I picked one up.
I'm being a bit optimistic as I've only just started 'The Goldfinch' (which looks massive) and have to return that in 12 days.
I'll be interested to see what you think of 'The Land of Decoration' and am looking forward to starting it myself.

  11. I'd have been drawn in by that cover too ... and the word 'extraordinary' is always a hook, even though I know it's just publisher's blurb.

The Book Thief I want to 'do' backwards ... watch the film and then read the book.
